Underground Utility Locating Is Required Before Mechanized Digging

Trenching must not begin until applicable underground utilities have been properly located and the work area is ready for excavation. Public utility markings do not necessarily identify every private line, irrigation pipe, septic component, landscape wire or privately installed service on a property.

The property owner, general contractor and participating trades should disclose known private utilities and arrange additional private locating when needed. Utility markings, approved trench routes and excavation limits must remain visible while work is performed.

Any unexpected utility, unmarked line, unsuitable soil, groundwater or conflicting site condition may require work to stop until the issue is evaluated safely.

Trench Excavation Is Different From Installing the Utility

Atlanta Land Grading can prepare the physical trench and support related earthwork. The licensed or qualified trade responsible for the system should determine the required route, depth, materials, connections, inspections and technical installation standards.

For example, an electrician may specify the conduit and trench requirements, while our team performs the excavation. A drainage contractor or approved plan may establish pipe slope and outlet location before we dig the route.

Defining this division of responsibility before mobilization helps prevent delays, incorrect trench dimensions and disputes about pipe, conduit, inspections or final connections.

Drainage trenches must be planned around the source of the water, the proposed pipe or aggregate system and the location of a suitable outlet. Digging a trench without a workable discharge point does not automatically solve a drainage problem.

The route must also account for existing elevations, foundation areas, septic systems, utilities, property boundaries, erosion risk and the possibility of concentrated discharge.

When the project requires broader yard reshaping, swales or correction of low areas, trenching may be combined with drainage grading and yard grading.

Backfilling and Surface Completion

What Happens After the Pipe or Conduit Is Installed?

Backfilling should occur only after the responsible contractor confirms that the installation is complete and any required inspection has been approved.
