Slope Grading Is Not the Same as Geotechnical Slope Stabilization

Routine grading can reshape manageable ground and correct certain surface drainage or erosion conditions. It does not automatically resolve deep soil movement, landslide risk, failing retaining walls, unstable fill, structural settlement or geotechnical failure.

Large elevation changes, visible ground movement, deep cracks, leaning retaining walls, recurring slope failure or structures near a steep cut may require evaluation by a geotechnical engineer, structural engineer or other qualified professional before excavation begins.

Slope Grading Is Different From Making a Yard Completely Level

A customer may describe a project as “leveling the yard,” even when the property still needs a controlled slope for drainage. Flattening an area without considering where water will go can create ponding or redirect runoff toward buildings and neighboring property.
